Castleton Dispatches Lyndon St. 89-32

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans took control with a dominant first half and cruised to a 89-32 victory over visiting Lyndon St. on Tuesday evening in Glenbrook Gym to improve to 12-0 on the season and 5-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Castleton shot 58.8 percent from the field in the first half, including a blistering 6-for-8 from beyond the arc to take control in the first half, 51-14. The Spartans finished the game shooting at a 52.2 percent clip while holding the Hornets to just 22.8 percent from the field in the contest. Castleton also forced Lyndon St. into 28 turnovers while recording 18 steals.

Three players reached double figures and 11 scored overall, led by Jade Desroches with 14 points. Desroches hit four threes and added three assists in just 13 minutes of action. Tarryn Bolognani and Alyssa Leonard each chipped in with 11 points. Heather Murdough was also strong off the bench with six points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Castleton actually fell behind 4-3, but five straight points in less than 20 seconds gave the Spartans an 8-4 advantage. Lyndon scored to cut the deficit to two on its next possession; however, that would be as close as the Hornets would get. Castleton scored nine a row over the next 3:14 to take a 19-6 lead with 16:01 left in the first half.

A layup by the Hornets broke up the run. The Spartan defense tightened up once again, though, holding Lyndon St. scoreless over the next ten minutes and going on a 26-0 run. Castleton continued to push the pace and a three by Desroches made it 51-14 at the break.

The Spartans kept the offense humming in the second half, opening the period on a 23-4 run over the first nine minutes to take a 74-18 lead. Castleton subbed liberally over the final 11 minutes of action and finished the game with the 57-point victory, 89-32.

Brianna DuPont and Stephanie Bull each added eight points off the bench. Liz Douglass had a team-high four assists, as the team totaled 26 on 35 field goals and 12 different players recorded at least one helper.

Emily Gray was the only Hornet in double figures with 16 points on 7-for-19 shooting. Lyndon St. drops to 4-7 overall with the loss and 2-4 in the NAC.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host New England College at 5:30 pm in Glenbrook Gym.
