Spartans Lock Down on Eagles 94-48

CASTLETON, Vt.  – Castleton put down the defensive clamps and hit shots from all over the floor on the way to a 94-48 victory over Green Mountain on Tuesday evening in Glenbrook Gymnasium. 

The Spartans connected on 13 shots from beyond the arc and shot 44.2 percent from the field to improve to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Eagles struggled offensively, shooting 29.0 percent from the floor and committing 26 turnovers as they dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play. 

Mark Comstock led the team with 26 points and five rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. In all 12 different players scored and the bench recorded a season-high 50 points. Logan White was also in double figures with 14 points. Tyler Ackley ran the offense effectively with six assists, three steals and zero turnovers. 

Carnelius Green scored 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting to lead the Eagles, and added six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alex Homkey was also in double figures with 21 points. Elijah Wiggins grabbed a game-high 12 boards off the bench. 

White led off the game with a jumper for the Spartans, jumpstarting a 16-4 run to open the game, which was punctuated by a deep Jeremy Odena triple with 13:47 left. Cardell Speights broke up the run momentarily but a Chris Barletta layup off the glass with 12:56 remaining made it 20-5. The Eagles countered with five straight but it wouldn't be enough. 

Castleton responded with 13 straight points, the final of which came on a layup by Comstock with 8:21 remaining. Trailing 33-10, the Eagles got the lead back under 20 with back-to-back buckets. However, over the final seven minutes the teams traded baskets and the Spartans went into the break with a 46-23 lead. 

In the second Castleton came out firing once again, going on 10-2 run over the first two minutes to extend the lead to 56-25. The Spartans continued to put pressure on Green Mountain, and a 6-0 spurt stretched the Castleton advantage to 67-32 with 12:24 remaining in the contest. The Spartans subbed liberally over the final 12 minutes and held the Eagles scoreless over the last four minutes to finish with a 46-point victory. 

Sophomore Chad Pulver grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the game and also scored eight points and dished off a pair of assists. Rob Coloutti had nine points off the bench, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. 

The Spartans return to action on Friday when they travel to face Thomas at 5:30 pm.
