Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans made 15 shots from beyond the arc and forced Johnson St. into 20 turnovers on their way to an 87-69 victory over the Badgers on Thursday evening in Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton shot 46.1 percent from the field and went 15-for-37 from beyond the arc while holding Johnson St. to just 38.1 percent from the field, as the team improved to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Badgers, meanwhile, drop to 6-9 on the year and 4-5 in NAC play.
The Spartans outrebounded Johnson St. 47-37, including a five-rebound advantage on the offensive boards. They also scored 19 points off 20 turnovers, compared to just nine points off turnovers for the visitors.
Freshman Rob Coloutti led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc and was joined by three others in double figures. Logan White chipped in with 13 points and four assists while Jeremy Odena and Mark Comstock each had ten. Odena also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Chris Barletta ran the point effectively with nine points, eight assists and just one turnover.
Bryan Hickey was the Badgers top scorer on the evening with 15 points on 7-for-15 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Ron Adrian also reached double figures with 11 points. Cody Camisa chipped in with nine points and nine boards.
White led off the game with a three and Castleton jumped out to a 9-4 lead over the first 2:20 of the contest. Back-to-back triples by Andy Bousono and Camisa put the Badgers in front, 10-9, but Comstock answered at 16:22 with a three of his own for the 12-10 lead. Bousono hit another shot from downtown, but 7-0 run put the Spartans in front 19-13 with 13:38 left.
Bousono hit another three just 11 seconds later, though Castleton responded with the next ten points punctuated on a shot from beyond the arc by Coloutti with 9:41 left in the half. Leading 29-16, the two teams traded baskets over the next six minutes, leaving the Spartans in front 43-28. A layup by Dammy Mustapha extended the lead to 18, 48-30, with 28 seconds left, but Asim Khan countered with a triple to give Castleton a 48-33 lead at the break.
The Spartans scored the first seven points of the second half to push their lead to 55-33 with just 2:12 elapsed. A Hickey jumper ended the run, but Castleton extended its lead to 28 over the next four minutes, with the final bucket coming on a three by Coloutti with 13:41 left.
A quick 4-2 run made it a 26-point game, but a 6-2 run by Coloutti pushed the Spartan advantage to 75-45. Castleton's lead hit 30 once more before both teams subbed liberally over the final ten minutes and the Spartans finished with an 18-point win.
Tyler Ackley finished the game with a game-high four steals and added six points and three steals. Overall 13 different players scored for Castleton.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Lyndon St. at 1 pm. Johnson St., meanwhile, hosts Green Mountain on Saturday at 1 pm.
