Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. - The Spartans were unable to capture a set on Wednesday evening, falling 3-0 to Southern Vermont at Glenbrook Gym.
The Castleton defense struggled against a potent Mountaineer attack, as they dropped the first two sets 25-9 and 25-11, before a stronger showing in the final set, 25-15. Southern Vermont registered 39 kills and hit .269 while the Spartans hit .058 for the match with 14 kills.
Freshman Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) led the offense with five kills and added seven digs. Junior Ruth Tomlinson (Huntington, Vt.) had a team-high 11 digs on defense and first-year Bridget McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) had a strong all-around game with two kills, five assists and five digs.
Jessica Alvarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Danielle Healis (Escondido, Calif.) led the Southern Vermont offense with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Vivian Delgado (La Puente, Calif.) had a team-high 18 digs and Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) dished out 25 assists.
The Spartans return to the court on Saturday when they host a tri-match. Castleton opens against Green Mountain at 11 am. and plays again at 3 p.m. versus Bay Path College.
