Spartans Drop 3-1 Match to Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. -  Castleton State College dropped its third straight match on Tuesday, falling to Coblelskill 3-1, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 in non-conference action at the Iorio Gymnasium. The win improved the Fighting Tigers overall mark to 5-3 on the year while the Spartans fall to 2-5 on the campaign.

The Spartans received a strong all-around effort from freshman outside hitter/setter Bridget McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) who had 16 assists, 14 digs, five kills and a service ace in the contest. Junior outside hitter Sarah Wheeler (Kinderhook, N.Y.) was also solid and registered a team-high eight kills to go with three digs in her return to New York. Freshman Patrice Herrington () added a team-high 19 digs.

Cobleskill continued to flex its newfound muscle up front as the tandem of sophomore middle hitter Kady Porterfield (Macdoel, Calf.) and freshman Melissa Spears (East Fishkill, N.Y.) dominated the middle of the court. Porterfield had 11 kills to go with: five digs, three service aces and two solo blocks while Spears tallied 13 kills to go with six blocks on the evening.

The Fighting Tigers also received strong efforts directing the attack from sophomore setter Mary Gallagher (Troy, N.Y.) who had 26 assists and five digs and from sophomore setter Casey Holbert (Sauquoit, N.Y.) who added 17 assists on the evening.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday Sept.22 when it travels to Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. for a tri-match beginning at 11:00 a.m.
