Box Score Led by their senior captain Chelsea Crehan, the Castleton women's tennis team began the season by inching out a 5-4 win over UMass-Boston in Rutland.
The Beacons were crippled by a limited roster and had to forfeit 2 points to the Spartans at sixth singles and third doubles, granting Castleton a 2-0 lead before play began. The team dropped both the first and second doulbles flights to even the match at 2-2.
In singles competition, the Spartans jumped out into the lead with straight-set wins from Lauren Fedorka at fourth singles and Meghan Susslin at fifth singles. The Beacons' Samantha Counts grabbed a win at second singles over Castleton's Felicia West and Hieu Nguyen edged Olga McIntyre in a three-set match at first singles.
With the score tied at 4-4, the match came down to the third singles flight. Castleton's senior captain Chelsea Crehan pulled through for the Spartans with a come-from-behind win to give the Spartans the 5-4 victory.
Castleton improves to 1-0 and returns to action Sept. 2 at Plattsburgh St.
