Second-Half Surge Leads Castleton over Maine Maritime

Castine, Maine  - The Spartans outscored Maine Maritime by 23 points in the final 20 minutes to erase a halftime deficit and finish with a 91-71 victory over the Mariners on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton shot 43.4 percent from the field and forced 20 turnovers to improve to 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. Maine Maritime shot 40.9 percent from the floor in the game, dropping to 2-5 overall and 2-1 NAC play. 

Junior Logan White went off for a career-high 30 points to pace the offense. He is the first Spartan to score 30 since Josh Howe totaled 34 on Feb. 16, 2008 versus Becker. White also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes. 

Dammy Mustapha recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Mark Comstock (17) and Chris Barletta (10) also reached double figures. 

Castleton jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a pair of Barletta baskets in the first two minutes. The teams traded baskets for the next three and half minutes, with another Barletta score making it 14-13 at the 14:23 mark. 

The teams continued to trade runs and neither could gain a lead greater than seven. Trailing by three with just under three minutes in the half, White went on a personal 5-0 run to put the Spartans in front 44-42 with 58 seconds left. However, the Mariners scored the final five points of the half to go into the break with a 47-44 lead. 

Castleton opened the second half on a 9-4 run, taking a 55-53 lead on a layup by Mustapha with 16:03 left in the game. Andy Ball hit a three on Maine Maritime's next possession to take back the lead. White responded with a layup and Tanner Darwell hit a three to give the visitors a 60-56 lead at the 14:19 mark. 

The Spartans pushed their lead to ten on a Comstock three with 9:32 remaining. The teams traded buckets with a free throw by Jason Hatch making it 81-71 with 6:43 left. That would be the last point for the Mariners as Castleton outscored them 10-0 the rest of the way. 

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they host Springfield at 7 pm.
