Box Score Rutland, Vt. - The Castleton Spartans (4-1-1) and the Huskies of Southern Maine (1-1-2) skated to a 1-1 tie in ECAC East action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
Paula Stephens made 28 saves for the host Spartans and freshman forward Nicoline Jensen scored her third goal of the weekend in the overtime draw.
The Spartans and the Huskies had a scoreless first period with both teams having opportunities to take the lead. Southern Maine outshot Castleton 11-6 in the frame, but goalie Paula Stephens was up to the task, thwarting every Husky attempt.
The Spartans offense came alive at the 5:45 mark of the second period and scored on a their first power play of the game. With time running out on the advantage, Samantha Pion took a slap shot from the point which was stopped by Southern Maine goalie Liz Bergstrom, but the puck rolled to the near post and Jensen found the back of a wide-open net to make it 1-0.
The Huskies answered back at the 12:03 mark. Talya Bent ripped a shot off of Spartan goalie Paula Stephens who couldn't corral the puck and Kailey Bubier jumped on the rebound and put the puck into the net for her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The Huskies had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds of the frame but Stephens made her 17th save of the game on a slap shot from Bubier to keep things tied going into the final period.
Both teams had their chances in both the third period and overtime period but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. Each goalie was peppered with shots but were able to keep the game knotted up.
Stephens finished with 28 saves while Bergstrom stopped 29 shots.
The Spartans return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel to UMass-Boston on November 30th at 4 p.m.
