Maltbie Propels Castleton to NAC Semifinal

CASTLETON, Vt. - No. 2 seed Castleton took care of business on Saturday afternoon against seventh seed Thomas, beating the Terriers 5-1 at Spartan Stadium in North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal action.

The Spartans dominated play, outshooting Thomas 42-2. Senior Mercedes Maltbie (Warrensburg, N.Y.) finished with a goal and two assists on the day while Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) added a pair of goals.

Castleton improves to 15-4 overall, setting a new program mark for victories in a season. Thomas concludes its season with a 7-10 mark.

Junior Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Spartans just 3:17 into the contest, putting home a rebound right in front of the net. In the 11th minute, Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, Vt.) made it 2-0 off a shot right in front of the mouth of the goal off a nice cross from Maltbie.

Chipman added to the Castleton lead just over two minutes later, scoring off a rebound in front of the cage.

The Spartans earned their final goal of the half off a penalty corner with no time remaining. After multiple shots on net, Maltbie collected the ball and ripped a shot past Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, N.H.).

In the second half, Castleton outshot the Terriers by a 15-0 margin. Chipman concluded the scoring for the Spartans off a cross from Maltbie in the 46th minute.

Jessica Galatioto (Queensbury, N.Y.) was forced to make one save in net in earning her 14th win of the season. Sourgiadakis made 24 saves in the cage for Thomas.

Chipman's four points on the season gives her 59 points for the season, breaking the program's single-season record of 55 set in 2008 by Carolyn Griggs. She currently leads the NAC with 23 goals and 13 assists.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday in the NAC Semifinals when they will face either the University of Maine at Farmington or Simmons.
