Box Score Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Castleton women's volleyball team used their best hitting performance of the season to earn a 3-1 victory over Mass.-Maritime on Wednesday evening in the Clean Harbors Center.
The Spartans cruised in the first two sets, dominating 25-9 and 25-10. Castleton slipped up in the third, falling 25-22, before clinching the victory with a 25-15 win in the final set. The team improves to 5-7 overallwith the victory while the Buccaneers drop to 1-19 on the year.
Junior Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.) led the potent attack, hitting .450 with a season-high 12 kills. Overall the Spartans tallied a season-high 53 kills on the evening. Freshman Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) and Patrice Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) each added eight kills in the effort.
Defensively, Chambers and senior Nicole Valastro (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.) led the team with 12 digs apiece as the team totaled 67. Freshman Kelly Mills (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was third on the squad with nine digs. Classmate Shelby Smyth (Chelmsford, Mass.) continued her strong play, registering 14 assists, four service aces and five digs. Michaela Babineau (Fitchburg, Mass.) added a team-high 20 assists to help facilitate the offense.
Castleton returns to action at 6:30 pm for a match against Albertus Magnus in the Clean Harbors Center.
