Six Spartans score in double figures, Castleton defeats Thomas 90-72

WATERVILLE, Maine – Juniors Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) and Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) led six Spartans in double figures scoring 16 points each as Castleton triumphed over Thomas, 90-72, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

The Spartans, winners of five-straight, improve to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the NAC. The Terriers fall to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in NAC play.

Jaques, along with her 16 points (6-of-14 field goal, 4-of-8 from beyond the arc), hauled in three rebounds, dished out six assists and added one steal. Powers grabbed four boards, handed out one assist, had one steal and one block. Megan Johnson (Rutland, Vt.) chipped in with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds while freshman guard Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, three rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists. Kelly Conway (Rutland, Vt.) registered 13 points hitting 3-of-4 three point attempts and brought down seven boards. Taylor Race (Germantown, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points, two rebounds and a steal.

For Thomas, Karin Bird (Lee, Maine) tallied a game-high 29 points shooting 10-of-17 from the field, 1-of-3 from distance and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Bird also added six rebounds and four assists while teammate Kellie Martel (Cambridge, Maine) scored 20 points with six of her seven baskets coming from long distance. 

Castleton led 48-34 at halftime and never looked back shooting an impressive 55.2 percent from the field for the entire game. The Spartans outrebounded the Terriers 40-26 on the glass in the victory.

Castleton returns to action tomorrow, on the road, against NAC opponent, Maine-Farmington, at 4 pm.
