Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, Mass.) scored a game-high 34 points to lead Thomas College over Castleton, 96-73, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday night.
The Terriers improve to 9-10 overall on the season and 5-4 in NAC play. The Spartans fall to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the NAC.
DeVaughn led five Thomas players in double figures on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and 12-of-15 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard just missed a double-double bringing down nine rebounds, dishing out two assists, two steals and two blocks. Isiah Brathwaite (Farmington, Maine) racked up 17 points and drained 92 percent of his free throws. Franklin Salvador (Somerville, Mass.) finished with 14 points while fellow freshman Stanley Greene Jr. (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in 11 points and senior Andrew Duncanson (Portland, Maine) registered 10 points on the evening.
For Castleton, Jared Paul (Tampa, Fla.) tallied a team-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor including five 3-pointers. Sophomore swingman Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) added 19 points (9-of-14 field goal and 1-of-1 from beyond the arc) and six rebounds.
Castleton claimed an early 3-0 lead but after both teams traded leads twice in the half Thomas took a three-point lead at 6:38 on a Salvador three-pointer to make it 20-17 and the Terriers never looked back. Salvador continued to widen the gap in the half going 4-of-6 from distance to push Thomas to a 36-27 halftime lead.
The Spartans cut the deficit to as close as three points twice in the second half, 53-50, on a Paul three-pointer at the 12-minute mark and again at 9:59 on a Comstock layup to make it 55-52 but never closed the gap as Thomas went on a 16-5 run to close out the contest.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow, on the road in NAC action against the University of Maine Farmington at 2 pm.
