Uhrin gives Husson its 11th conference win with game-winning layup

CASTLETON, Vt. – Senior guard Jay Uhrin (Winterport, Maine) canned the game-winning layup with four seconds remaining on the clock to lift Husson University over Castleton, 63-60, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Before the game, seniors Mike Knight (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and Patrick Winn (Granville, N.Y.) were honored for their contributions and efforts towards the men's basketball program.

The Eagles improve to 18-5 overall and 11-1 in the NAC. The Spartans fall to 13-10 and 8-4 in NAC play.

With under 10 seconds remaining, Uhrin cut towards the basket and finished the layup in traffic for the game-winner giving him a team-high 19 points on the afternoon. Joshua Jones (Jefferson, Maine) notched a double-double with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting and 16 rebounds (four offensive). Daeshawn McMorrin (Naugatuck, Conn.) rounded out Husson's double digit scoring efforts with 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the line.

For Castleton, Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) finished with a team-high 19 points going 5-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line alongside five rebounds. Knight scored 15-of-his-16 points in the second half to help guide the Spartans' rally after trailing 28-27 at halftime. Junior guard Jared Paul (Tampa, Fla.) collected 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Trailing 27-17 with four minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the first half, Castleton went on a 10-1 run to close the gap to 28-27 headed into intermission. Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, Vt.) highlighted the run with two made free throws and a resounding rejection of Brooks Spaulding's (Fairfield, Maine) attempted layup just before time expired.

Down 56-53 in the second half at 5:14, sophomore guard Eric Modica (Kittery, Maine) buried a three-pointer on a feed from teammate Luis Medina (Hartford, Conn.) to tie the contest up at 56-56.

After turnovers by both squads on the next two possessions, Knight responded for Castleton with a jumper at 3:53 to take a slim 58-56 lead, the last the Spartans garnered in the contest.

Husson followed with four consecutive free throws - two from McMorrin and a pair from Uhrin - to take a 60-58 lead. At 1:31, Comstock knotted up the contest at 60-60 with a pair of free throws of his own before Uhrin's heroics with four seconds remaining in the game.

The Eagles outrebounded the Spartans 47-27 with 17 coming on the offensive glass. Husson shot 37.5 percent from the field (21-56) and 69.0 percent (20-29) from the line. Castleton went 16-for-51 from the field, 31.4 percent, and 26-for-33 from the charity stripe (78.8%).

Castleton returns to action on February 15, on the road, against Johnson St. at 5:30 pm.
