Paul's 6-for-6 performance from long distance leads Spartans past Mariners, 84-73

CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior guard Jared Paul (Tampa, Fla.) scored a team-high 22 points making all six of his three pointers he attempted to lead Castleton over Maine Maritime, 84-73, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday night at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in NAC play. The Mariners fall to 8-13 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

Paul went 7-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from the free throw line to round out his scoring efforts. Sophomore guard Kevin Eisenberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) added 18 points highlighted by a 4-for-6 night from beyond the arch and a 4-for-5 line at the charity stripe. Mike Knight (Spring Valley, N.Y.) notched 17 points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line while bringing down a team-high nine caroms (four offensive). Sophomore swingman Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) rounded out the majority of the scoring with 13 points.

For Maine Maritime, junior center Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinham, Maine) tallied a game-high 26 points going 12-of-16 from the field and 2-of-3 from the line while grabbing eight rebounds and swatting away two shots. Paul Cambpell (Camden, Maine) registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds alongside four assists and one block. Ben Russell (Farmington, Maine) added 11 points making 2-of-his-6 three pointers.

Castleton raced out to a 46-33 lead at halftime as Paul and Eisenberg combined for seven three-pointers in the half. The Spartans shot 71.4 percent from beyond the arc (10-14) and went 8-of-10 from the free throw line with Knight making 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to build a 13-point gap.

In the second half, the Mariners trimmed away at the Spartans lead cutting the deficit to 58-55 at 11:16 on a Dostie jumper from the elbow but Castleton responded with an 8-0 run jumpstarted by an Eisenberg three pointer from the wing at 10:46 which helped the Spartans close out the contest.

Castleton shot 41.4 percent from the field, 65 percent from long distance (13-20) and 76.7 percent from the line (23-30) en route to the win. The Spartans, despite being outrebounded 41-32, had 11 steals while Maine Maritime had 19 turnovers.

Castleton returns to action tomorrow at Glenbrook Gymnasium against Husson at 2 pm.
