Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton held a slim 30-27 lead at halftime, but surged ahead in the second half with a 50-point outburst to defeat non-conference opponent Colby-Sawyer, 80-66, in men's basketball action on Tuesday night at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
The Spartans improve to 4-4 overall on the season. The Chargers fall to 4-6 overall.
Sophomore guard/forward Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) led all Castleton scorers with a 19-point effort shooting 7-13 from the field including three 3-pointers. Senior guard Mike Knight (Spring Valley, N.Y.) turned in 15 points (6-12 fg) and a team-leading seven rebounds. Junior guard Jared Paul (Tampa, Fla.) notched 12 points going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line while freshman guard Tyler Ackley (Scotia, N.Y.) led all players with six assists.
For Colby-Sawyer, freshman forward Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points (7-14 fg, 6-12 ft) and eight rebounds. Junior forward James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) brought down a game-high 13 rebounds (three offensive, 10 defensive), scored five points and dished out four assists. Junior guard Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) also tallied double-digit points shooting an impressive 5-for-8 from long distance and two free throws for 17 points.
Late in the second half, Bardaglio canned a three-pointer from the wing to cut the deficit to 56-54, but Castleton went on a 12-4 highlighted by Knight and Comstock who each scored five points during that span and the Spartans never looked back.
Comstock's three-pointer at 6:12 of the second half gave Castleton a 68-58 lead and that margin did not dip below five for the remainder of the contest.
Colby-Sawyer outrebounded the Spartans 38-33 while Castleton caused 12 of the Chargers' 20 turnovers with steals.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 7 at 7:30 pm against St. Joseph's (Vt.) on the road.
