Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton State College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures, and limited Lyndon State College to just 16.7 percent (10-60) shooting in an 82-46 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
Castleton's third-straight win, and fourth in its last five games, ups the Spartans' record to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The loss ends Lyndon's three-game win streak, and drops the Hornet mark to 7-8, 3-3.
Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) canned a trio of three-pointers en route to a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Kristie Dunchus (West Rutland, Vt.) added 13 points and five boards off the bench, while Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.), Megan Johnson (Rutland, Vt.) and Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) each dumped in 10. Johnson finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, while Powers was 5-for-6.
Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vt.) scored a game-high 17 points on 4-for-17 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Hornets, while Naomi White (Danville, Vt.) added nine points and eight boards.
The Spartans never trailed, racing out to a 17-1 lead over the opening four minutes and 41 seconds of play. Castleton took advantage of its size inside early, with Powers and Johnson combining for 10 points during the opening run.
Castleton continued to exploit the interior defense of the Hornets throughout the opening frame, building the lead to as many as 30 (44-14) with three minutes remaining. Lyndon ended the half on a 9-2 run, slicing the deficit to 46-23 at the interval, thanks to four points from White and two from Shauna Buck (Newport Center, Vt.), all from the free throw line.
For the opening half Castleton posted 19 field goals on 15 assists to only four turnovers, and an 18-2 edge in the paint. The Spartans maintained the healthy margin for the remainder of the contest, and finished with a 30-2 edge inside, in addition to a 28-6 margin off the bench. Tarryn Bolognani (Whitingham, Vt.) turned in a solid overall effort for the Spartans with eight points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
The Hornets produced a 22-for-34 effort from the line, but managed just a 4-for-24 performance from three-point land in the loss.
Castleton returns to action Monday evening when the Spartans play host to Johnson State in NAC action at 5:30 p.m. Lyndon will travel to Green Mountain Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. NAC tip-off.
