MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore goaltender Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) recorded her first-collegiate shutout turning away 48 shots, including 20 in the third period, to guide Castleton past Salve Regina, 1-0, in ECAC East action on Saturday afternoon at St. George's Rink.
The Spartans improve to 5-7-2 overall and 3-5-1 overall. The Seahawks fall to 6-9-3 (5-4-2 ECAC East).
Junior defenseman Meagan Hulbert (Barre, Vt.) scored the game-winner at 13:43 of the first period on an assist from Laura Szwed (White Lake, Mich.) beating Salve Regina goaltender Ali Muehlbronner (Glendale, Pa.) for her second goal of the season and Castleton's first win over the Seahawks since February 6, 2009.
For the rest of the contest it was all Dembowski (2-3-1) as the sophomore netminder made 13 saves in the first, 15 in the second period and a game-high 20 saves in the third stanza. Muehlbronner (4-5-0) ended the contest with 23 saves.
Castleton travels to Holy Cross, tomorrow, at 2 pm for an ECAC East matchup.
