Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Senior forward Josh Jones (Jefferson, Maine) and senior guard Jay Uhrin (Winterport, Maine) combined for 41 points to guide Husson University over Castleton, 77-63, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday night at Newman Gymnasium.
The Eagles improve to 10-3 overall and remain perfect in the NAC at 3-0. The Spartans fall to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in NAC play.
Jones shot 5-of-8 from the field and an impressive 11-of-15 from the free throw line for a game-high 21 points while Uhrin went 9-of-17 from the floor and 2-of-4 at the line for 20 points on the night. Uhrin also dished out five assists while teammate Luis Medina (Hartford, Conn.) notched seven points, brought down six boards, six assist and had one steal.
For Castleton, Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) led all Spartans' scorers with 12 points including one three-pointer, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, Vt.) chipped in with two points and a team high seven rebounds.
Leading 37-25 at halftime, Husson came out scoring in the second stanza pushing the gap to 45-29, the Eagles biggest lead of the game to that point, at 15:03 on an Uhrin jump shot.
The Spartans worked their way back into the contest using an 18-8 run to cut the deficit to seven points, 53-46, at 10:10 as freshman guard Matt Cooney (Washingtonville, N.Y.) canned a jumper.
Uhrin answered back for the Eagles with a jumper of his own at 8:01 to make it 55-46 but Castleton continued to trim away at the lead bringing the deficit to only seven points, twice, over the next 3:10.
Husson responded to the Spartans' rally with a 15-0 run as Marc Zaharchuk (Richmond, Maine) gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the night, 71-50, at 3:12 with two free throw shots that close out the game.
Castleton was outrebounded 34-24 and lost the turnover margin 20-17 to Husson.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow, on the road, against NAC foe, Maine Maritime, at 4 pm.
