Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Colby College women's basketball team earned its second consecutive ECAC Holiday Festival title with a 64-37 win over Castleton on Sunday afternoon.
The Mules improve to 8-1 overall on the season. The Spartans fall to 5-4 and see their four-game winning streak end.
Junior forward Jil Vaughan (Wareham, Mass) played her way to a second Holiday Festival Most Outstanding player award, posting 16.5 points and 7 rebounds per game.
Vaughan finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while Jules Kowalski (Montville, N.J.) added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jacky McLaughlin (Medfield, Mass.) nailed three 3-point shots on the way to 10 points, Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) added eight points and five boards and Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) nailed two 3-point shots among her eight points. Sophomore guard Jayde Bennett (Lynn, Mass.) pulled down nine rebounds, had a team-high three assists, and scored four points.
For Castleton, Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) finished with 17 points (7-of-13 fg, 3-of-6 3-pt) and three steals. Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) notched nine points and five boards.
The Mules, winners of four straight games, fell behind 6-3 in the opening minutes of the game. Colby then went on a 14-2 run, capped by a 3-point shot by McLaughlin, to take a 17-8 margin with 9:10 remaining until intermission. The Mules ended up taking a 26-14 lead into the break.
Colby put the game away quickly in the second half, using a 22-2 scoring run to start the half and take a 48-16 lead. The Mules went up 59-21 with 6:02 to play.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow against Salem St. in Kissimmee, Fla. With tip-off at 2:30 p.m.
