Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – All five of Castleton's starters scored double-digit points including a game-high 22 points from junior guard Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) to cruise past Thomas College, 78-59, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
The Spartans improve to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the NAC. The Terriers fall to 4-7 overall (2-1 NAC).
Jaques, 6-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line, added five assists and three rebounds while sophomore guard Tarryn Bolognani (Whitingham, Vt.) just missed a triple-double scoring 12 points (6-of-12 fg), 10 rebounds (five offensive) and eight assists. Freshman guard Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) tallied 11 points, dished out seven assists, brought down seven rebounds and had three steals. Megan Johnson (Rutland, Vt.) added 10 points, four boards, five blocks and five steals and fellow starter and forward Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) notched 19 points (8-of-13 fg, 3-of-3 ft) corralled five rebounds, one assist and two steals.
For Thomas, senior guard Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, Maine) led all Terriers' in scoring with 18 points canning 12-out-of-20 free throw attempts, three assists, two blocks and six steals. Kellie Martel (Cambridge, Maine) tallied 15 points, all coming from long distance with five 3-pointers, one assist, one rebound and three steals. Alexis Evans (Embden, Maine) and Karin Bird (Lee, Maine) rounded out the majority of the scoring with nine points apiece.
Castleton led by as many as 23 points in the first half trailing only once in the contest in the opening minutes at 19:13 after Blakney made it 4-2 with two-of-her-12 free throw makes. In the first half, the Spartans outscored the Terriers 17-10 off of turnovers and dominated in the paint outscoring Thomas 18-8.
Castleton outrebounded Thomas, 42-27, had 24 assists in comparison to the Terriers' four and blocked seven total shots.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, January 18 at home against NAC opponent, Johnson St., at 5:30 pm.
