Castleton downs Union on the road for first time since '03

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead Castleton State College to a 4-2 win over Union College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday evening at Frank Bailey Field.

Castleton won for the sixth time in its last seven games to improve to 7-2 overall, defeating Union for the first time since a 4-3 double overtime victory in 2003. Union falls to 3-4.

Preusser started the scoring three minutes into the contest, breaking free into the striking circle and sniping her fifth goal of the season from 12 yards outs. Courtney Nolan (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half, converting her sixth goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) made it 3-0, pouncing on her own rebound and sending it to the back of the cage for her sixth of the season.

Union got on the board five minutes into the second half when Isabel Zellweger (Rye, N.Y.) scored on a backhander from seven yards out. Preusser answered seven minutes later, potting a Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.) assist. Kelsey Powers (Naples, Maine) rounded out the Dutchwoman scoring with seven minutes remaining, converting on a penalty corner for her sixth goal of the season.

Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.) stopped 13 shots on net to earn the win, while Sarah Rios (Queensbury, N.Y.) made 11 saves for Union.

Castleton will return to action this weekend when the Spartans face a stern conference road test, traveling to Husson on Saturday and St. Joseph's (Me.) on Sunday. Coaches' Players of the Game: Siobhan Whittemore, Shannon Burns and Rachel Preusser
