Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. - Sarah Flore (Springfield, Vt.) and Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) each scored a pair of goals to lead Castleton State College to a 5-0 shutout of New England College in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton (4-1) freshman forward Blake Wardwell (Woodstock, Vt.) scored what proved to be the game-winner with 8:20 remaining in the first half, sending home a rebound off a shot by classmate Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.).
From then on it was all Flore, Chipman and the Spartans. Four minutes into the second half Flore converted a penalty stroke to make it 2-0. Chipman converted a one-timer into the far corner off a centering pass from Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.). Flore made it 4-0 two minutes later, pouncing on a rebound and rifling a shot past goalie Melissa Mower (Bangor, Maine). Chipman finished off the scoring with six minutes remaining, converting another Paproski assist into her fourth goal of the season.
Mower was excellent in the cage for the Pilgrimsn stopping 16 shots that came her way, while Amanda Naimie (York, Maine) made a defensive save and Brianna Gerrior (Gloucester, Mass.) had two.
Castleton pressured the Pilgrim defensive backfield for the entire contest, holding a 30-11 in shots and an 11-6 margin in penalty corners.
New England College (1-4) put together an excellent chance at a goal with 21 minutes left in the second half, and Castleton holding a 2-1 lead. Katherine Rich (Westborough, Mass.) sent a pass in from the right flank, but Castleton goalie Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.) came out of her cage and broke up the two-on-one situation.
Whittemore (seven saves) preserved her first shutout of the season with 4:21 remaining, making a fantastic blocker save on a Gerrior penalty stroke.
The Spartans have now won four-straight contests, the last two by way of the shutout, with Flore scoring two goals in each victory.
Castleton returns to action September 18 when the Spartans travel to Ramapo College for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference affair.
New England College will play host to Thomas on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
