Castleton falls to Husson, eyes NAC Semifinal

Bangor, ME – The Castleton State College men's basketball team dropped a 65-50 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match-up to Husson University on Saturday evening, the final day of the regular season.

With the loss Castleton finishes the regular season at 16-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play. The Spartans - who locked up the second seed and a first round bye earlier this weekend - will play the winner of the Thomas (3) versus Johnson State (6) quarterfinal match-up in the semifinal round of the tournament Friday. Husson earns the fourth seed in the tournament and will host Green Mountain (5) Tuesday in quarterfinal action.

Jared Paul (Tampa, FL) led Castleton with 13 points while Mike Knight (Spring Valley, NY) added 10 points and six rebounds. Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, ME) scored a game-high 18 points and Joshua Jones (Jefferson, ME) added a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Eagles. Matt MacKenzie (Warren, ME) rounded out the Eagles in double figures with 15.

Castleton never trailed through the opening half of play, leading by as many as eight (20-12) with seven minutes remaining, before settling in for a 22-19 lead at halftime.

A Jay Uhrin (Winterport, ME) gave the Eagles their first lead at 28-27 with 16:44 to go, but Knight answered for Castleton on the ensuing possession to take the lead back at 29-28. A three-pointer from Jones on the next trip gave Husson the lead for good however, and ignited a 17-2 run over the next six minutes of play to put the Eagles comfortably ahead 45-31. Husson maintained the double-digit margin for the remainder of the contest in earning the win.
