Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton State College used a 19-8 run midway through the second half to grab its first lead of the game, and never trailed again defeating Colby-Sawyer College 66-58 in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
Castleton (3-3) placed three players in double-figures, led by 15 points and seven rebounds from from Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.). Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) added 14, and Kristie Dunchus (West Rutland, Vt.) tossed in 11 off the bench.
Colby-Sawyer (4-3) was led by Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) added 13.
Trailing 44-34 with 15:46 remaining in the contest, Castleton reeled off eight quick points as a pair of Jaques three-pointers book-ended a Powers lay-up in transition. Bullett answered with a three-pointer of her own to push the Charger lead back to five at 50-45, but back-to-back lay-ups from Dunchus and Powers brought the Spartans back to within one. After a Charger score, the Castleton transition game once again proved vital as Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) scored a pair of lay-ups and Powers added another to give the Spartans a 55-52 lead they would never relinquish.
In the first half Stravinsky led the Chargers to a 36-30 lead at halftime. The senior captain meshed 3-of-5 attempts from three-point land, en route to 15 first-half points. Colby-Sawyer was dialed in from long distance, canning 8-of-15, and building the lead to as many as 11 with 10 minutes remaining before the interval.
After intermission Castleton limited the Chargers to just 3-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc, and 8-of-34 overall, as Colby-Sawyer finished the day shooting 30 percent. Conversely, the Spartans shot 47.8 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game at 42 percent (21-for-50). Castleton was also 7-for-15 from beyond the arc and held a distinct advantage at the free throw line, finishing 17-for-26 to just 5-for-10 for Colby-Sawyer.
Leonard finished with nine points and six assists, while Kelly Conway (Rutland, Vt.) was good on all three of her attempts from long distance for nine points.
Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer returns to home to take on Bowdoin on Thursday in the Chargers' final game of the first semester, tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Castleton returns to action Saturday when the Spartans play host to the Merchant Marine Academy at 5 p.m.
