RUTLAND, Vt. – New England College used three different goal scorers including Kaleigh Costello's (Hudson, N.H.) eventual game-winner at 4:39 of the third period to defeat Castleton, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in ECAC East action at Spartan Arena.
The Pilgrims improve to 6-3-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the ECAC East. The Spartans fall to 3-5-1/2-4-1.
Senior forward Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) put New England College ahead 1-0 at 5:06 of the first period on the power play corralling a rebound off of Chelsea Boroski's (Sterling Heights, Mich.) initial shot and wristing home a shot into the bottom left corner of the net past Castleton goaltender Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.).
Sam Hippern (Dover, N.H.) made it 2-0 at 4:23 of the second period depositing a rebound in front of the net behind Dembowski for her fourth goal of the season.
Early in the third period, Spartans' sophomore forward Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.) tallied her second goal of the season with a wrist shot over the blocker of Pilgrims' goaltender Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) to make it a 2-1 deficit. Freshman forward Rebecca Bragg (Scarborough, Maine) notched her first-collegiate point with an assist on the score setting up Werger for the tally.
Costello lit the lamp only three minutes and 26 seconds later stealing the puck in front of the net and snapping a wrist shot top shelf behind Dembowski for her second goal of the season (unassisted).
Meagan Hulbert (Barre, Vt.) cut the gap to 3-2 at 11:39 of the third period on the power play putting home a rebound off of Amy Costa's (Bristol, R.I.) slapshot from the top of the point for her first goal of the season.
Dembowski kept it a 3-2 contest at 16:30 of the third period robbing Boroski of a breakaway bid on net.
T. White made 14 saves in net for New England College while Dembowski turned away 36 shots in the loss.
Castleton returns to action on Friday, January 7 in the opening round of the Rutland Herald Invitational (RHI) against Buffalo St. at 7:00 pm. Plymouth St. will play Potsdam in the other opening round contest at 4:00 pm.
