Castleton can't overcome slow start, falls at Husson

BANGOR, Maine - The Castleton State College field hockey team stumble out of the blocks and could not recover, allowing three first half goals en route to a 4-2 loss at Husson University Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.

With the loss Castleton falls to 7-3, 1-1 NAC while Husson improves to 3-4, 1-1.

Kajsa Blindow (Morgan, Vt.) scored just less than one minute into the contest, potting an assist from Courtney Allen (Gardiner, Maine). Allen carried the ball the length of the field before passing off to Blindow who sent it to the back of the cage.

Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.) tied the score four minutes later off a Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) assist, but Husson's Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, Maine) answered with two more goals before the interval to take a 3-1 lead.

Blindow made it 4-1 with just less than eight minutes remaining, and Preusser added her second with four minutes left to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Spartans outshot their hosts 25-18, inlcuding a 17-7 margin in the second half, but goalie Kristen Capen (Leeds, Maine) stopped 12 shots to earn the win.

Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.) made eight saves in the losing effort.

Castleton returns to NAC action tomorrow at 1 pm at St. Joseph's (Me.).
