Castleton drops non-conference match-up at Middlebury

Middlebury, VT – The Castleton State College men's basketeball team fell 88-58 to Middlebury College Tuesday evening at the Pepin Gymnasium.

Castleton raced out to a 18-8 lead, but Middlebury answered with a 12-2 run of its own to tie the game at 20-all with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.

A 15-2 run just a few minutes later left Middlebury with a 37-29 lead behind six points from Jamal Davis. The Panthers entered the locker room with three players in double figures, while Castleton shot .571 from the floor and trailed 46-38.

A hoop from Castleton's Derick Faragon brought the Spartans within six to open the second half, but that is as close as they came. Middlebury slowly increased its lead, taking a 59-46 advantage when Ryan Wholey converted a lay-up with 13:16 remaining. Following a Castleton hoop, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to move out to a 69-48 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. Another big run followed as the Panthers scored 15 of the game's next 17 points to come away with the win.

Wholey paced the Panthers with a career-high 20 points on 7-15 shooting from the floor. Sharry added 15 points, nine boards and four blocks of 6-9 shooting, while Davis scored 14 with eight caroms. Jake Wolfin added 13 points in the victory, while Andrew Locke scored nine.

Faragon led Castleton with 13 points, Jared Paul scored nine, while Logan White and Mike Knight scored seven apiece.
