Castleton picks up first win under Culpo 80-69 over MCLA

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral) and Castleton's Derick Faragon (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) each led their team to victory on Friday night in the Hartwick College Tom Greene Memorial Tip-Off Classic at Lambros Arena.

The Hawks scored an 86-58 win over Cazenovia to improve to 2-0 on the season. Castleton defeated Massachusetts College 80-69 in the opener.

Blazek was on fire for 'Wick as he poured in 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He also nailed all six of his attempts from three-point range. It was the highest career three-point percentage (100%) in a game and the most treys (6) in a game for the sophomore guard.

The Hawks, who led from start to finish on the night and led comfortably by 20 points (46-26) at the half, shot 52% from the floor for the game, including 50% (11-of-22) from beyond the three-point arc. The Hawks led by as many as 36 points with less than 10 minutes to play. Fifteen of 16 players on the roster figured into the scoring column for 'Wick.

To go along with Blazek's 26, senior center Kyle Phillips (Ashland, MA/Ashland) netted 11 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, and senior forward James Mantas (Niskayuna, NY/CBA) dropped in 10.

The Wildcats were led by Matt Phillips' (Avon, NY/Avon) 11 points. Darnell Sampson (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) added 10 points and Andrew Jensen (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) secured a game-high nine boards.

In the first game of the night, Faragon scored 22 points in the first half alone to lead Castleton (1-1) to its first victory of the season, 80-69, over Massachusetts College (1-1). Faragon hit 9-of-14 from the field for a game-high 28 points for the Spartans. Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT/Rutland) added 18 points for the winners with Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT/W. Rutland) adding 11.

The win was also the first at Castleton for former Hartwick head coach Paul Culpo.

Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belgium/Dennis-Yarmouth) and Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA/John D. O'Bryant) each had double-doubles for the Trailblazers in a losing effort. Greenberg notched 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Harris scored a team-best 20 with 13 boards.

Castleton will play Cazenovia tomorrow at 2 p.m. Hartwick hosts MCLA to close out the Classic at 4 p.m.
