Rutland, VT-The Castleton State College women's ice hockey team dropped a 6-1 ECAC East contest to Salve Regina University at the Rutland Regional Fieldhouse to fall to 5-13-3 overall and 4-9-3 in conference play.
The two teams entered the game tied with 11 points in ECAC East play, and battling for position in the conference tournament.
Salve Regina broke through with just under one minute remaining in the first period as Kendra Andrie sent home her first goal of the season. Jillian Donnelly scored the game winner with just 33 seconds remaining in the period.
The Seahawks scored two unanswered to open the second period before Castleton put home a power-play goal for its only tally of the night. Gabrielle Gardner scored her eighth of the season to put Salve Regina up 3-1, and Ashley Stoppa scored her first of the year to give the Seahawks the three-goal cushion.
Paige O'Neill scored off assists from Charl May and Sarah Pearson for Castleton's only goal of the evening.
Lauren Barella stopped 29 shots to earn the win, while Vanessa Carter stopped 25 in relief of Kalla Robb who stopped 19 through the first 30 minutes of play.
Both teams return to the ice Saturday afternoon with Salve Regina traveling to Plymouth State and Castleton playing host to MIT at 3:00 pm.
