Rutland, VT-The Castleton State College women's ice hockey team fell 4-2 to UMass-Boston in ECAC East play. The Beacons received one goal, one assist performances from Lauren Duran and Sandy Parlato to improve to 10-8-0 overall and 8-5-0 in conference play.
The Beacons broke through first when the league's leading goal scorer, Maria Nasta tallied her 16th of the season, assisted by Rachel Sousa and Duran. Nicole Adams tied the score at 1-1 six minutes later off assists from Steph Purinton and Kayla Twigge. A little more than two minutes later Duran beat Castleton goalie, Vanessa Carter on the power-play to give the Beacons a 2-1 edge entering the first intermission.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the second period Maria Guanci notched the game-winner, assisted by Parlato.
Castleton would bring the score to within one, on a Katelyn Greene goal in the third period, but that was as close as they would get. Parlato tacked on an insurance goal with 1:50 remaining in the game for the final score.
Carter stopped 43 shots in the loss for 5-9-3 (4-5-3 ECAC East) Castleton. Beacon goalie, Jessica Sams stopped 29 in the win.
Both teams return to action Saturday as Castleton hosts St. Anselm College at 2:00 pm, while UMass-Boston will travel to Plymouth State for a 2:00 pm face-off.
