Rutland, VT-The Castleton State College women's hockey team was defeated by Buffalo State by a score of 2-1 to split the weekend series. The Bengals scored with seven minutes left to break the 1-1 tie and held the lead thanks to goaltender Rachel Bennett.
Buffalo State got on the scoreboard first with a first period goal by Kristin Bozek who put the uncontrolled puck past Spartan goalie Vanessa Carter. Castleton tied the game in the second period with a power play goal by Kayla Twigge. The Spartans looked to take the lead a number of times on the momentum from the goal by Twigge, but were shut down the rest of the way by Bennett. Casey Bull took advantage of one of the stops, taking the puck the length of the ice and slipped it past Carter on the breakaway, giving the Bengals the 2-1 victory.
Carter finished with 19 saves in the losing effort for the Spartans. Castleton falls to 5-13 overall. The Spartans are on the road next weekend, traveling to Southern Maine Saturday night for a 7:00 pm start. Bennett had 23 stops in the Bengals victory, who improve to 7-9-1 overall. Buffalo State returns home for a pair of games with Neumann on Saturday and Sunday.
