Castleton falls to Holy Cross 5-2 in ECAC East action

Rutland, VT- Holy Cross scored 4 unanswered goals in the second and third periods as the Crusaders came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Castleton 5-2. The win completed a season sweep for Holy Cross and was the 4th consecutive victory for the Crusaders.

Castleton got on the board first with Adrianna Riggio netting an assist from Katelyn Greene to take an early lead for the Spartans. The Crusaders came back to even the score with a power-play goal by Stephanie Couzin from Erica van DeGraff and Lisa Wilson. With under a minute left in the first period, Greene took a rebound from the Castleton defensive end and took it to the other end of the ice beating goalie Jennifer Van Dongen to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

Holy Cross capitalized on a face-off in the Spartan end with Samantha Rush evening the game 2-2 in the second period. The Crusaders took the lead 5 minutes later with Meghan Donovan netting a slap-shot from outside the blue line past Castleton goalie Vanessa Carter. Holy Cross added two more goals in the third by van DeGraff as well as an empty net goal by Kathryn O'Connor to give the Crusaders the 5-2 victory.

Van Dongen exited after the first period finishing with six stops while back up Casey McCullion blanked the Spartans with 12 saves of her own. Carter finished the game with 29 saves for the Spartans.

With the loss, Castleton falls to 4-12 overall and 2-11 in ECAC hockey play. The Spartans play again next Saturday and Sunday hosting Buffalo State both days at 7:00 pm and again at 2:00 pm. Holy Cross improves to 11-3-1 overall and 8-3 in ECAC conferance play. The Crusaders return to the ice next Friday hosting New England College at 7:00 pm.
