Scott Legacy

Scott Legacy has been head coach of the Castleton wrestling team for a decade as of the start of the 2025-26.

The 2024-25 wrestling team finished with a record of 22-3 overall, winning the Ithaca Invitational, Roger Williams Invitational, Penn College Invitational, and the NEWA Futures. The Spartans also swept multiple series of head-to-head matchups throughout the season, including the Stevens Institute of Technology Tri-Match, Manganaro Duals, Little East Conference Quad, and the Trinity Tri-Match. The Spartans finished third at the NCAA Regionals and 21st in the NCAA National Championship.

All eight wrestlers who made the NCAA National Championship received post-season All-NEWA honors. Gavin Bradley, James Rodriguez, Elijah Cyr, Nathaniel Camiscioli, Connor Gregory, Sampson Wilkins, Haven Tatarek, and Evan Day earned second team honors while Drew Marchese and Jashon Holmes earned spots on the Honorable Mention list. First-years Nicolas Balella, Colby Celuck, Keonta Crawford, Elijah Farias, Stone Farnsworth, and Dom Lapier earned their spots on the NEWA All-Rookie team after their impressive first season as Spartans.

The 2023-24 Spartans went 20-3 winning the Ithaca Invitational, Roger Williams Invitational, Ted Reese Invitational, Citrus Invitational, and NEWA Futures. The team secured a 3rd place finish at NCAA Regionals and qualified six for Nationals. Gavin Bradley and Sampson Wilkins both secured All-American Status. Legacy was named Regional Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.

The 2022-23 squad went 18-6, winning the Roger Williams Invitational, and finishing NCAA Regionals in 4th place. Five Spartans qualified for NCAA Championship, with Cooper Fleming and James Rodriguez making their second appearance, and Michael Angers, Sampson Wilkins, and Gavin Bradley each qualifying for the first time. Rodriguez finished seventh and earned All-American status for the second year in a row. 

The 2021-22 squad went 18-3 under Legacy. Winning the Wildcat Invitational, and the NEWA Futures Tournament. the Spartans finished 6th at NCAA Regionals. James Rodriguez and Cooper Fleming made history for the Spartans becoming the first wrestlers to win two or more matches at a singel NCAA National Championship. Rodriguez finished 8th and earned All-American status.

The 2020-21 season saw Castleton go unbeaten at 5-0, taking down two top-15 teams in Stevens Tech and TCNJ. The Spartans also hit the national rankings for the third year in a row, finishing the season ranked No. 24 in the country.

2019-20 saw the Spartans reach new heights as a program, winning 18 dual matches, including a win over No. 8 Stevens Tech. The Spartans lost just eight duals on the season, four of them coming against nationally-ranked opponents. The program had its first two 100-win wrestlers reach the mark during the season, with Mitchell LaFlam and Max Tempel reaching the plateau. 

In 2018-19, Castleton continued to show improvement as a program with a 13-9 mark in dual matches. Jesse Webb and Max Tempel qualified for the NCAA National Championships, becoming the second and third wrestlers in program history to do so.

In his first year of 2016-17, Legacy led the Spartans to an 11-14 dual meet record, including a victory over Norwich during the NEWA Duals. Castleton won the Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine, the first tournament it ever competed in, and finished 13th at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Zak Hale qualified for the NCAA National Championships and won a match at the national meet, while Tyreek Staton also earned All-Region honors by finishing fifth at the NCAA Regional Championships.  

Legacy came to Castleton following a Hall of Fame career as the wrestling coach at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington for 30 years. The 2014 USA Today National Coach of the Year and New England Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee created a dynasty at Mount Anthony, illustrated by his program's 28 consecutive Vermont State Wrestling Championships. 

During his tenure he amassed an impressive 699-36-2 overall record, including eight New England Champion teams and eight more which were runner-up. In the last five years alone he won three New England Championships and finished second once. He also has had 15 teams ranked in the top-25 nationally.

Legacy has shown the ability to develop wrestlers at all weights, with 175 individual Vermont State Champions – a national record for all high school coaches, and 84 All-American wrestlers. He has coached seven national champions, 28 New England Champions and has had three high school USA Team Members. One of his wrestlers has gone on to make the USA World Team and over 180 have competed at all levels of collegiate wrestling. 

In addition to his coaching merits, Legacy has held numerous leadership positions within the wrestling community. He has served as the Cadet/Junior National Team Coach since 1990 and for the past 13 years has been a board member of the National High School Coaches Association since 2002. He has been the Vermont State Chairman for USA Wrestling for nearly 30 years and is the Co-President of Catamount Wrestling Club. 

Legacy holds a bachelor's degree from Oswego State and a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Administration from Endicott College. He was a three-time high school state champion in Vermont and a high school All-American. He recorded over 100 wins in college, while spending two years each at Morrisville State and Oswego. At Morrisville he was a Junior College National Qualifier and Region 3 Junior College Place winner, as well as team captain. Legacy finished his career at Oswego, where he was a SUNYAC Place winner.
