CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University's volleyball program opened Little East Conference action on Friday evening, falling in three sets to the three-time defending conference champions, UMass-Boston, at Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton falls to 0-6 on the season and 0-1 in LEC play, while the Beacons improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Alondra Nims led the way for the Spartans' offense, hitting at a .333 clip with two kills on six attack attempts. Brianna Hake had a team-leading four assists, while Meghan Zawatsky led the way with eight digs.
The Beacons jumped out to a big lead in the opening set, stretching their edge to 21-7 before Castleton rattled off three straight points. After UMass-Boston killed the Castleton rally, the Spartans came right back with three more points to make it 22-13 in the opener. The Beacons allowed Castleton to get no closer, however, closing out the first set 25-14.
The second set was more of the same for UMass-Boston, as they rattled off 14 consecutive points to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 16-4 lead in the middle frame. The Spartans made a late run in the set to make it 23-11, but a Beacon timeout stymied the momentum as the visitors claimed the second set, 25-11.
The final frame opened as a back-and-forth battle with the teams trading points early on. With the score tied 8-8, the Beacons rattled off four straight points to take a lead they would not relinquish, as they cruised the remainder of the way to a 25-12 victory in the third set to seal the match.
Castleton returns to the court on Tuesday as it travels to Northern Vermont University-Johnson to take on the Badgers in a non-conference matchup.
