COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Castleton won the first two sets of night but couldn't capture the third as the SUNY Cobleskill came back for the 3-2 opening-night victory on Tuesday evening.
The Spartans hit .031 for the contest and recorded 37 kills but also 32 errors as they dropped to 1-0. Defensively, the team recorded 77 digs and 17 total blocks while the Fighting Tigers had 78 digs and nine total blocks. The home team had 33 kills and just 19 errors to hit .106.
Castleton came out strong with a 25-13 victory in the opening set and pulled in front 2-0 with a 25-19 win in the second set. The Spartans let the third set slip away, 25-19 and couldn't find any rhythm in the fourth set as they fell 25-8. Castleton trailed just 4-3 in the fifth set but couldn't comeback for the win, dropping it 15-12.
Individually, Amanda Chambers recorded a double-double with 11 kills and ten digs while J'Leen Diaz led the team with 19 digs. Michaela Babineau was solid with 14 assists, three aces and three digs while Kristi Lawless added 17 digs. Cassidy Tedeschi had just five kills but totaled six blocks overall at the net.
The Spartans return to action Sunday when they travel to face U. Maine-Presque Isle and Southern Maine on the road.
