POULTNEY, Vt. – For the second straight weekend Castleton earned a 1-1 mark against a pair of North Atlantic Conference opponents, falling 3-0 to defending conference champion Colby-Sawyer and taking down host Green Mountain at the Eagle Dome on Saturday evening.
In the opener, the Spartans fell 25-16 in the first set and then lost the next two 25-13 and 25-11 to the Chargers. Amanda Chambers led the offense with seven kills and 11 digs. Kaylee Pratt added four kills while Kelly Mills had three kills and eight digs. Michaela Babineau dished off a team-high nine assists and chipped in nine digs.
Castleton came back strong in its second match, earning a 25-18 win the first set. The second was a battle with the Spartans taking a 23-21 lead on an ace by Shelby Smyth. Three points later they led 24-23, but Green Mountain tied it back up. The teams went back and forth the Eagles eventually took it 30-28.
In the third set, Castleton fell behind 10-8 early. However, they put together eight consecutive points to grab a 16-10 advantage. Green Mountain countered with a run of its own, but the Spartans went back in front 22-15. They finished off the set for the 25-17 win.
The final set was back and forth until a 5-0 run gave Castleton an 11-7 lead. Green Mountain trimmed the deficit, tied it up 20-20 and even went ahead 22-20. However, the Spartans countered with the final five points of the set to earn a 25-22 win.
Pratt had 11 kills while Chambers recorded a career-high 28 digs and two aces to go with six kills. Cassidy Tedeschi added eight kills while Lawless had 17 digs and Babineau dished off 16 assists.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to face Lyndon and Johnson St. beginning at 10 am.
