CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans dropped a pair of matches on Saturday in Glenbrook Gymnasium, falling to Colby-Sawyer and the University of Maine at Farmington by matching 3-0 scores.
Facing the top-ranked team in the North Atlantic Conference, Castleton didn't back down, despite dropping the match 25-14, 25-7, 25-14 to Colby-Sawyer. sophomore Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Spartan offense and finished with five of the team's ten kills while hitting an impressive .364. Defensively, sophomore Ruth Tomlinson (Huntington, Vt.) led the way with four digs while Schreiber and senior Sarah Flore (Springfield, Vt.) each had three. Sophomore Nicole Valastro (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.) added four assists and two digs.
Castleton took on the Beavers in the second match of the afternoon and once again came up short, 25-16, 25-15, 25-11. Valastro and classmate Paige Lacey (Westerly, R.I.) did a bit of everything for the Spartans in the match. Valastro was second on the team with four kills, had nine assists, four digs and a block while Lacey tied for the team lead with five kills. She also finished with four assists, three digs and a pair of blocks.
The Spartans drop to 1-18 on the season and conclude their season on Oct. 26 when they travel across the state to face Norwich at 7 p.m.
