CASTLETON, Vt. - The Spartans were a point from taking the first set but an untimely bounce set the tone for the rest of the match as Castleton dropped a 3-0 decision, 27-25, 25-10, 25-21, to Green Mountain on Tuesday evening in Glenbrook Gymnasium.
The first set was back-and-forth until a service ace by sophomore Chi Vo (Burlington, Vt.) put the host squad on the verge of victory at 25-24. However, it wasn't to be as Castleton dropped the final three points of the set for the 27-25 loss.
Green Mountain rode that momentum into the second set and the Spartans were never able to capture a lead as the Eagles finished with a 25-10 victory.
In the final set Castleton jumped out to a 9-2 advantage behind the strong serving of sophomores Ruth Tomlinson (Huntington, Vt.) and Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.). However, Green Mountain slowly closed the gap before drawing even with the Spartans at 20-20. The Eagles snatched the momentum and scored five of the set's final six points to earn the victory.
Nicole Valastro (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.), Paige Lacey (Westerly, R.I.) and Schreiber all finished with four kills apiece while Valastro led the squad with a team-high 12 digs. Vo added eight digs and Tomlinson finished with a team-high five service aces.
Sophomore Kara Egan (Breezy Point, N.Y.) was the Eagles' top offensive threat, finishing with a game-high ten kills and also adding three service aces. Madison Wage (Cheshire, Conn.) finished second on the team with eight kills and added four digs.
The Spartans fall to 0-13 with the loss while Green Mountain improves to 4-8 overall. Castleton returns to the court on Oct. 8, when the team takes on Johnson St. and Lyndon St. at Green Mountain at 2 and 4 p.m.
