Spartans Edge MCLA in Thrilling Fashion

CASTLETON, Vt. - Coming down to sixth-flight singles, the Castleton women's tennis team prevailed with a thrilling 5-4 win this afternoon to edge MCLA in a NEAC matchup. 

With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Trailblazers suffer their first conference loss and fall to 3-3 overall.

The match came down to a sixth singles slot to decide the final score. With each team sitting at four points, Emily Miller fought back from a 5-2 deficit to take the set, 7-6, in a tiebreak to edge the Trailblazers. Miller won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second to set the stage for the match-winning matchup.

Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk also won matches in singles action for Castleton. Bannister improved to 5-3 on the season in fist singles after edging her opponent 6-2 and 6-4. Kruk prevailed with straight-set 6-2 and 6-0 scores to improve to earn her team-leading sixth win of the season. 

Castleton went into singles with the 2-1 advantage from doubles action. Bannister and Megan Nadler set the tone with an 8-5 win to take the first point of the match. Kruk and Kayla Zsido teamed up for a tight 7-6 win in second doubles to go into singles with a 2-1 advantage. The Trailblazers chippd away in singles to set the stage for Miller. 

Castleton is now tied for the most wins in the conference with two and will return to action on Saturday when they will travel to Thomas to take on the Terriers in another NEAC contest. The starting time is set for 1 p.m.
