CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's tennis program secured its first win of the season with a rain-shortened victory over the Green Mountain Eagles this afternoon, 6-1.
With the win, Castleton improves to 1-1 on the season, while Green Mountain falls to 0-2.
Ciara Bannister and Megan Nadler got the Spartans off to a fantastic start in doubles with an 8-0 win versus Alex Reedy and Janelle O'Connell of the Eagles. Senior Monika Plante and Jen Blay also finished strong for the Spartans, winning their match by the same score of 8-0.
Earning the point for Green Mountain was the doubles pair of Paige Vlahos and Clair Chapman, defeating Kirsten Kruk and Kayla Zsido of Castleton, 8-5.
The Spartans swept the board in singles with two matches suspended due to weather conditions. Zsido lead Clair Chapman 6-4 after one set, while Nadler took the first set, 6-4, and was leading 5-1 in the second set before the match was suspended.
In singles action, Bannister, Kruk, Plante, and freshman Emily Miller all won in straight sets for the Spartans. Miller's win in singles was the first of her career and finished with scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Castleton returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 when the Spartans open conference play with a matchup at Lyndon State.
