WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. –The Castleton women's soccer team was defeated by two-time defending national champion and 11th-ranked Williams, 7-0, on Sunday.
In her first start in goal as a Spartan, sophomore Alex Benfatti made 13 saves as the potent Eph offense produced a 39-4 advantage in shots.
Six different goal-scorers including two goals by Liz Garvin made up the attack for the hosts. In addition, Avery Mohan and Mikayla Kappes each registered a goal and an assist. Claire Tolliver finished the afternoon with a pair of assists, while Victoria Laino, Gabriella Lowe, and Mirabai all scored once.
Two of Castleton's four shots came in the opening 7:15 of play, including the lone shot on goal of the afternoon delivered by Makenzi Bellando. It was the only save Williams goalkeeping was forced to make as Whitney Lincoln and Leyla Kamshad split the contest to combine for the shutout. Bellando produced a pair of shots in the contest for Castleton (4-4-0), as did junior Rylee Nichols.
Williams (3-2-1) made it 1-0 8:48 into the contest to break the ice. Then, the Ephs scored three times over a span of 10:30 to take a 4-0 cushion into the half. Three second-half goals in the 49th, 62nd, and 84th minutes completed the scoring.
