PAWTUCKET, R.I. –After a 2-0-0 week, including opening Little East Conference (LEC) play with a 3-0 victory over Keene State, Castleton's Makenzi Bellando, Cassidy Newman, and Loren Henderson earned LEC women's soccer weekly awards for the week ending September 15.
Bellando was named the LEC Offensive Player of the Week thanks to a three-goal, one-assist performance for a total of seven points in two games. She netted her first two goals of the season on Wednesday at MCLA. Then, she scored the game-winning goal in the 25th minute to open the scoring on Saturday versus Keene State. She later added an assist – her conference-leading fourth helper of the year. Through six games, the senior forward ranks second behind teammate Rylee Nichols in the conference with 10 points. The Carver, Massachusetts native now sits in a tie for fifth on the Castleton all-time list with 31 career goals.
Newman helped anchor a Spartan defensive unit that did not surrender a goal in either contest to garner LEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Over the two games, Castleton outscored its opponents, 9-0. The back line allowed just three shots, two on goal, in a shutout win over MCLA before keeping the Keene State offense in check with Castleton's third clean sheet of the season. The Unadilla, New York native centered the unit that only required its goalkeepers to make six saves in 180 minutes of action.
Henderson was named the LEC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season. She played a part in the defensive effort that did not surrender a shot on goal in the opening half at MCLA. Then, she made four saves to keep Keene State off of the board to claim her second shutout of the campaign. The Rutland, Vermont native is tied for the conference-lead with 33 saves. She also ranks second with an .825 save percentage and third with a goals-against average of 1.25.
Castleton will ride its three-game winning streak on the road on Saturday when it continues conference action at UMass Boston. The Beacons scored an 86th-minute goal to defeat the Spartans 1-0 in the LEC quarterfinals last season.
