CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans looks to remain perfect in conference play when they travel to face Husson on Saturday at 4 pm.
Castleton is 5-4, 3-0 in the North Atlantic Conference, and coming off a 15-6 victory over Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday. The team jumped out to a 9-1 lead at the half and received seven goals from Brianna MacKay. Brandi Whittemore added two goals, two assists and two caused turnovers. Tiffany Danyow anchored the defense with six caused turnovers and five ground balls.
This season the Spartans are averaging 14.44 goals per game, which ranks in the top 20 in the nation, but have upped it to 19.3 goals per contest against conference opponents. Senior Brianna MacKay leads the team and the NAC in points (47) and goals (34) while ranking second in assists with 13. Classmate Brandi Whittemore, meanwhile, has 30 goals, nine assists, 21 ground balls, 30 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. Grace Johnson in third on the team and fifth in the NAC with 29 points on 16 goals and 13 assists while Maria Ploof has 15 goals and 11 assists. Tiffany Danyow leads the defense with 23 caused turnovers, to go with 22 ground balls and eight goals.
Senior Meghan Els has been strong in net all season, starting all nine games and leading the NAC in both save percentage (53.1) and saves per game (11.6). She also has an 11.10 GAA. In three conference games she has been even better, with a 3.56 GAA and 71.4 save percentage.
Husson comes into today's contest with a 2-4 record and 1-1 in the NAC after earning a 20-5 victory over Johnson St. last weekend. The team led 12 -2 at the half and received four goals and five assists from Alissa Fallon. Kaitlin Dolloff made four saves to earn the win in net.
The Eagles are averaging 7.2 goals per game this year, led by Fallon. The senior has nine goals and eight assists for 17 points, while Amanda Deshales has seven assists, six assists, 20 draw controls and 17 ground balls. Mattie Russell is third on the team with ten points off eight goals and two assists. Dolloff has started all five games in net for Husson. She has a 47.5 save percentage with a 12.17 GAA while averaging 11 saves per game.
Last season Castleton went 2-0 against Husson. The Spartans won 20-8 during the regular season and then earned an 18-5 victory in the NAC Semifinals. MacKay had five goals and two assists while Els made 12 saves while allowing five goals.
