ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Castleton University women's ice hockey team suffered its second straight Saturday afternoon as it fell to Nazareth College at Bill Gray's Iceplex in a non-conference contest. The Golden Flyers scored the game-winning goal at the 5:08 mark of the third period to down the Spartans, 2-1. With the loss today, the Spartans fall to 5-4-0 while the Golden Flyers improve to 9-1-0.
The Golden Flyers, who are just outside the top 10 in the most recent USCHO.com Division III rankings, tallied the first goal of the game at the 9:08 mark of the second period. Jessica Kollberg scored her first goal off of the season to give the Golden Flyers the lead. Hailey Redders and Celena Rea recorded the assists on the first scoring opportunity for the Golden Flyers.
The Spartans were not down for long as Miranda Wheeler scored 29 seconds later to even the score at one a piece. Wheeler recorded her first career goal as the freshman buried the shot after receiving a pass from Kaitlin Bardellini and Darby Palisi.
The game-winning goal came after Cristina Darby was able to dig the puck free from behind the goal and centered it for Nikolle Van Stralen, who buried the shot for her fifth goal of the season to solidify the win for the Golden Flyers.
Despite the Golden Flyers holding a 50-12 advantage in shots on goal, the game remained tied throughout most of the third period. Goaltender Alexis Kalm kept the Spartans in the game as she was stellar in goal. Kalm earned the loss as she finished the contest saving 48 of 50 shots.
Women's ice hockey returns to action Sunday, December 1 as it travels to take on Utica in a non-conference matchup starting at 3 p.m.
