Mix Sparks Women's Hockey In Road Conference Victory

BOSTON, Mass. – Scoring the second goal of her career and second in as many games, Ryanne Mix's score in the 13th minute of the first period led the Castleton University women's ice hockey team past the UMass Boston Beacons – 2-1 – on Friday evening at the William T. Barry Ice Rink.

Castleton improved to 6-12-3 overall and 6-4-2 in New England Hockey Conference play, while UMass Boston falls to 9-12-2 and 5-7-2. The Spartan victory earns a split in the season series and snapped a streak of four-straight losses to the Beacons.

Holding a 2-0 lead late in the third period, Castleton earned a power play opportunity and a chance to put the game on ice. Cycling the puck, Mix fired on goal from the right wing, yet the Beacon's Edy Moritz blocked the shot. She recovered the puck, broke away from the Spartans defense and netted a shorthanded score to bring the hosts within one.

During the following three minutes – including 1:11 with an extra attacker – UMass Boston kept the pressure on. Rising through the mess and rampage of shots, Castleton netminder Rylie Wills stood tall in her crease, rejecting each attempt. The senior goalie sent aside 35 shots for a .972 save percentage in 60 minutes of playing time.

Earlier in the contest, Mix put the Spartans on top 1-0. With the Beacons' Julia Nolan going to the penalty box for hooking, Castleton set up its power play in the opposing zone. As her teammate screened the goalie, reigning NEHC Player of the Week Jocelyn Forrest fed Mix, who sent in a laser.

Up 1-0 just a few minutes into the third period, Courtney Gauthier made it 2-0 by turning strong defense into offense. Floating unseen between two Beacon players, the Tampa, Fla. native intercepted a pass and proceeded to beat the UMass Boston goalie for her sixth score of the season.

Women's ice hockey returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it heads north to Gorham, Maine where it will face the University of Southern Maine Huskies in conference action.
