Remillard Scores Twice As Women's Hockey Falls To Canton

RUTLAND, Vt. – Jade Remillard's two goals was not enough as the Castleton University women's ice hockey team fell 4-3 in an overtime battle against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in the first semifinal of the 2019 WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton falls to 4-8-2 on the season, while Canton improves to 5-4-3 overall.

Falling behind early, Castleton's Courtney Gauthier scored the equalizer in the 14th minute of the first period. Cycling the puck, Samantha Munroe moved it to Aimee Briand who set up Gauthier with a shot from the left of the net. Squeaking it between the pipe and the goalie's pads, the puck slipped over the line for the score.

After Canton reclaimed the lead a short time later, Jade Remillard scored her first goal of the day to tie it at 2-2. On a breakaway, Gauthier fed Remillard who put it past the goaltender in the eighth minute of the second.

Reclaiming the advantage once again, the Roos' Noelle Niemiec notched the go-ahead score late in the second period to hold a 3-2 lead. It would not last though as Remillard once again led the Spartans, picking up her second score of the afternoon. With help from Briand and Gauthier, she set up and beat the Canton netminder to even the score at 3-3.

The scoreline would remain in a 3-3 draw through the remainder of regulation, sending the tournament's first semifinal into extra time. Seemingly headed for a shootout with under two minutes remaining in the overtime period, Canton's Hannah Brady stole the puck and beat the goalie for the 4-3 victory.

Alexis Kalm was tagged with the loss despite making 30 saves in over 63 minutes of action. Canton's Brooke Susac made 31 saves in 62:25 of playing time.

In the faceoff battle, Castleton led the way with 40-of-67, while Briand went 24-10 and Bre Babiarz was 11-for-15.

Women's ice hockey will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday as it faces Manhattanville in the tournament's consolation contest. The two programs faced off in the 2018 championship contest with the Spartans earning a 1-0 win over the Valiants.

In the tournament's other semifinal, Endicott and Manhattanville tied 1-1. In the best-of-three shootout to determine the team to advance to the championship, Endicott earned a 1-0 victory.
