Spartans To Host Nor'Easters & Huskies In NEHC Play

CASTLETON, Vt. – Looking to bounce back from a loss to the nation's top-ranked team on Tuesday evening, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team hosts a weekend conference set against the University of New England – 4 p.m. on Friday – and the University of Southern Maine – 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Last time out, Castleton dropped a 9-0 decision at Kreitzberg Arena on the campus of Norwich University. The No. 1 Cadets were overwhelming, scoring four goals in the first and second periods, before adding a single tally in the final stanza.

Castleton made several attempts to slow down the high-powered Norwich offense, including succeeding in killing five of the seven possible power play opportunities. The Spartans also collected 16 faceoff wins.

Between the pipes, Rylie Wills made 20 saves combined during the second and third periods. Starter Alexis Kalm made eight saves in the first.

On Saturday, the University of New England welcomed the University of Massachusetts Boston for a New England Hockey Conference contest. The two teams played to a 2-2-overtime draw after both the Nor'Easters and the Beacons scored a single goal in the first two periods each.

Jessica Tolzman notched her team-leading third goal of the season, while Meagan Accardi got on the board with her first of the campaign. In goal, Caty Flagg was nearly impenetrable, stopping 46 shots, including 19 in the second and a couple in extra time.

Last season, the Spartans and Nor'Easters split the regular season slate with each team claiming victory at their home arena. Playing the third game in the NEHC Quarterfinal, it was UNE that came out on top by a 3-2 tally.

Southern Maine comes off a 1-0 win over Salve Regina on Saturday and will face No. 1/1 Norwich at Kreitzberg Arena on Friday. Against the Seahawks, the Huskies converted a third-period power play chance to skate away with the win. Riley Kirk scored the game-winner on the team's seventh extra-man opportunity.

Defensively, USM killed all seven of Salve Regina's powerplay chances, while goaltender Whitney Padgett stopped all 30 shots she faced.

In the Spartans and Huskies two meetings during the 2016-17 campaigns, Castleton went 1-0-1. After a 2-2 tie in Gorham, the Spartans returned home to win 4-0 in its Pink the Rink game.
