Castleton Succumbs In Third-Period UMB Comeback

BOSTON, Mass. – Four third-period goals propelled the University of Massachusetts Boston past the Castleton University women's ice hockey team 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

Castleton falls to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the New England Hockey Conference, while UMass Boston earns its first win to improve to 1-2 and 1-1 in league play. It was UMass Boston's 'Pink the Rink' game, which aims at raising awareness for Breast Cancer.

Castleton struck three times in the first period while remaining stingy on the back line to open a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. Scoring the second goal of her career in just her second game, Casey Traill found the back of the net 17 seconds in off an assist from Hannah Rose. Traill's shot was from near the blue line and deflected off the Beacons' goalie Rachel Myette.

Extending the lead with two quick scores just 40 seconds apart, Castleton looked poised to blow the game open. After notching a pair of goals on Friday, including the game-winner, Aimee Briand tallied the team's second goal with help from Chanel Tvergyak and Mollyshae Cadwell.

With the third goal, Courtney Gauthier assisted Rose at the 13:30 mark. Off a turnover, Rose put in a backhand shot, forcing a UMass Boston timeout.

Following the Spartans hot start throughout the first period, the Beacons scored six unanswered goals. After being outshot 13-4 and outscored 3-0 in the first, the Beacons came out looking a different team in the second stanza. Maren Brown and Katie Leffler notched one each in the second, while Kaleigh Beauregard, Sarah King and Alli Bianchini (2) scored the third-period goals.

Alexis Kalm (0-2) was tagged with the loss between the pipes, surrendering six goals and making 25 saves.

For UMass Boston, Alyssa DePippo earned the win after coming into the contest in relief of starter Myette. The latter made 13 saves in a perfect 45-plus minutes of play.

Women's ice hockey returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday as they welcome NEHC opponent New England College.
