Softball Drops Extra-Inning Affair and Suffers Sweep to Plymouth State

GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton University softball team dropped a pair of neutral-site conference contests to Plymouth State on Sunday. The Panthers snagged game one, 11-1, before winning game two, 5-4, in eight innings.

Caitlyn Miller earned the victory in both games for Plymouth State (11-9, 4-0 LEC). She pitched 11 innings in total, yielding two unearned runs while scattering seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She went four innings in the opener before tossing seven innings in relief in the nightcap.

For Castleton (7-12, 1-5 LEC), Machaila Arjavich was 2-for-6 on the day with two doubles, one run scored, and one RBI. Kylie Wright suffered the loss in game two despite going the distance. She surrendered 11 hits over eight innings of work while walking four and registering three punch-outs. Wright and Kate LaPan had the remaining RBIs for the Spartans.

Castleton will return to action on Tuesday at Keene State for a pair of conference matchups.

Plymouth State 11, Castleton 1 (5 innings)

For the second consecutive day, the Spartans stumbled out of the gates in game one, allowing the Panthers to cross the plate six times in the top of the first. Madison Harris and Nora Butler each hit an RBI single while Mel Goss was hit by a pitch and Jen Landers walked with the bases loaded.

Goss hit a solo home run to make it 7-0 in the third.

Castleton got on the board in the fourth with a single run. Calli Van Gorden got the Spartans' first hit with a clean single to left. Miranda Fish hit a single one batter later to put runners on second and third where Tori Swaine reached on an infield error to score a run.

Plymouth State added three tallies in the fifth to surpass the run-rule limit and complete the scoring.

Plymouth State 5, Castleton 4 (8 innings)

Jamie Boyle singled to open the second inning before Arjavich and Wright hit back-to-back doubles for a pair of runs. Two batters later, LaPan lined a single to right center to give the Spartans a 3-0 edge.

The Panthers tied it all at once in the third on a three-run home run by Harris. Debra Morrill hit a one-out single before Cassidy Emerson walked to set up the blast.

In the bottom of the fifth, consecutive singles by Devin Millerick and Boyle followed by an infield error on a ground ball through the shortstop by Arjavich gave Castleton a one-run lead.

For the second time of the battle, Plymouth State immediately knotted the score in the top of the sixth. Landers led off with a double in the left-center field gap. She slid to third on a pinch-hit single by Lindsey Hall and scored when Morrill grounded out to second.

Millerick singled and stole second representing the winning run in the bottom of the seventh but Miller induced a fly-out to get out of trouble.

Landers ripped a single to lead off the eighth inning before Hannah Seidner executed a sacrifice bunt to move Landers to second. With pinch-hitter Butler at the dish, a wild pitch moved the runners up. Then, Butler bounced into a fielder's choice with the infield in as Landers slid in safe at home for the eventual winning run.

Arjavich commenced the bottom of the frame with a double to center by the diving outfielder. Miller used two strikeouts followed by a foul line-out to seal the sweep.
