RUTLAND, Vt. - Igor Almeida's strong performance at the first flight of doubles was not enough as the Castleton University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Norwich University at the Grand Slam Tennis Center on Wednesday evening.
Castleton falls to 2-3 overall, while Norwich gets back to even at 5-5.
Despite the scoreline, the Spartans and Cadets played a number of tight matches, starting with doubles. The team of Almeida and Jared Wheeler went down 8-5 at first doubles, while Levi Williams and Spencer Butter battled but dropped an 8-6 decision at third doubles.
Almeida got off to a scorching hot start and did not look back as he earned his fourth win of the season at first singles, including winning both matchups with Norwich's No. 1 singles player. Leading 6-0 through the first set, he kept his foot on the gas and took the second, 6-2.
At the third flight of singles, Williams fought back from an early deficit to take the match the distance before falling. Dropping the opener 6-2, Williams remained competitive and earned a late break of serve to take a 7-5 victory. In the third set - an extended set - Norwich's Sam Beiter held off Williams for a 10-2 win.
Men's tennis returns to action as it heads out on the road for the first time in the last five matches with its conference-action opener. The Spartans take on the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
